MUD THERAPY

Stronger bones and joints, better immunity, zero inflammation

Our Thermæ are located in the heart of Europe’s largest thermal spa resort specializing in mud-balneotherapy, a natural treatment based on bio-thermal clay and “autochthonous” thermal water, with exclusive remineralizing, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and muscle-relaxing properties.

Mud-balneotherapy has multiple indications, but its primary application is in disorders affecting the musculoskeletal system (osteoarthritis and other degenerative conditions, osteoporosis, extra-articular rheumatic disorders, joint diseases including degenerative and autoimmune forms, when not in the acute phase).

THE MANY BENEFITS OF THERMAL MUD

DOC clay works wonders against stress as well: it fights it, reactivates circulation, detoxifies the body, and remineralizes it while relieving muscle tension.

Mature mud stimulates and oxygenates the blood and tissues, boosting energy and vitality.

The THERMAE at AbanoRitz now offer a holistic thermal wellness experience as primary prevention, thanks to new bio-medical approaches and protocols.

Lying on a bed of mud, wrapped in this natural thermal blanket — it’s total relaxation. Mud is rich in mineral salts, made even more concentrated by the thermal water. Direct contact with the skin triggers an osmotic process of mutual exchange. The body sweats and expels toxins. At the same time, it absorbs mineral salts that stimulate metabolism and activate anti-stress hormones: cortisol and beta-endorphins.

The neuroendocrine system benefits as well: the production of pituitary hormones is encouraged, leading to a rebalancing of bio-humoral and sexual equilibria. Meanwhile, the heat relaxes muscles and improves circulation — and to this are added the biological benefits of mature mud: bone tissue becomes remineralized and cartilage tissue is repaired.

MUD THERAPY
THE APPLICATION METHOD AND STAGES OF TREATMENT

The mud is applied to the body gradually, at the temperature specified by the Medical Director, who will welcome the guest at the hotel with an initial check-up and assessment visit.

The duration of mud therapy ranges from 15 to 20 minutes. Once the application time is up, the client is removed from the mud, washed with a thermal shower, and immersed in a tub of thermal water at a temperature of approximately 37°C (98.6°F) for about 8 minutes, then dried with warm towels.

The guest then returns to their room, where they rest in bed in complete relaxation for approximately 40 minutes to allow for the perspiration response.

This is followed by a thermal reaction massage, which amplifies the benefits, advantages, and sensation of deep relaxation produced by the mud treatment.

The full treatment plan consists of up to 12 sessions.

It can be comprehensive, if performed on the entire body, or partial, if limited to specific areas, such as the neck, back, upper limbs, lower limbs, or individual joints.

FROM SIMPLE CLAY TO MATURE MUD

Rich in trace elements, harvested from the bed of a small lake of volcanic origin in our Euganean Hills, separated from impurities, and matured in thermal waters, our spa mud detoxifies, reduces inflammation, and deeply decongests, stimulating and oxygenating blood and tissues while restoring energy and vitality.

The chemical composition and temperature of the water play a key role in the therapeutic action of the mud and in the development of the distinctive plant microflora (algae) and animal microflora (microorganisms) that form during the clay maturation process. During this process, the clay undergoes progressive colonization by numerous microalgae — including Diatoms and Cyanophytes — present in the ecosystem of the Euganean Thermal Basin, which give the mud its valuable chemical, physical, and therapeutic properties.

Our mud is incubated for at least two months in the presence of a continuous flow of thermal water, during which time it becomes abundantly colonized. Among the main microorganisms that colonize the mud are certain cyanobacteria; one of the most significant and abundant of these belongs to the genus Phormidium.

First isolated in our mud and extensively monitored over time, it produces a high level of anti-inflammatory activity with no side effects, even after repeated treatments.
